| Student Committee | | | (from the CASWE Constitution - May 2008) The mission of the Student Standing Committee of the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE) is to promote educational experiences within CASWE accredited schools of social work across Canada through student unity and consciousness raising. The goal of this committee is to facilitate student involvement in relevant activities of CASWE and thereby participate in the development of professional social work knowledge and practice skills that will prepare students for competent, ethical practice within the field of social welfare. Functions and Powers
The Student Standing Committee shall be empowered to: Recognize and advocate for the social and academic interests, needs and concerns of the students enrolled in CASSW accredited schools of social work across Canada. Represent interests, needs and concerns of the student population at the Annual General Meeting of the Canadian Association of Schools of Social Work, the Board of Directors of CASWE, as well as on an as-needed basis.Encourage active participation of the committee members in all social and academic affairs of CASWE and member schools.Examine issues that are influencing the experience of social work education or hold the possibility of influencing the experience of social work education for members of the student population.Build relationship and community within the body of students engaged in social work studies within member schools of CASWE.Provide information to students in social work education about CASWE and the potential ways in which they can participate in the association.Meet on an annual basis prior to the CASWE Annual General Meeting. The purpose of these meetings will be to elect new officers and to make collective decisions on matters of interest to students. Seek to hold membership from all CASWE accredited schools of social work in Canada and to be inclusive in nature in the interest of facilitating this function.Promote policy, curriculum and research interests that are seen by students to be beneficial and relevant to the quality of their education.Advocate in relation to issues of student concern and on issues of social justice.Term of Office and Nominating Procedures
Membership of the Student Standing Committee shall consist of four categories with unique roles and functions:Duties of the Chair of the Student Standing Committee shall be to:
Contact all CASWE accredited schools of social work to recruit student delegates from each institution. CASWE mandates that all schools ensure that a student delegate be elected by their student population for participation in this committee and attendance in its annual meeting. Facilitate the dissemination of information to students in order to promote active involvement in CASWE. This duty may be accomplished utilizing channels of communication including telephone, e-mail, letters as well as other viable technology. In addition this duty will normally include publication of at least one newsletter to the delegates per year. The Chair shall also maintain communication with student delegates.The Chair is responsible for informing the Board of Directors of activities on a semi-annual basis. An interim report and annual report shall be submitted to the BOD for inclusion in semi-annual reports. Organize and chair the meetings of the Student Standing Committee.To record or allocate a recorder for minutes of the Student Standing Committee meetings and to distribute them to the next Chair, the Student Delegate to the Board, Student Delegates and any other student wanting a copy. These minutes shall also be posted on the CASWE website.To conduct elections for new officers.Elections for the position of Chair of the Student Standing Committee shall occur on a yearly basis. This shall be accomplished in the Committee meetings prior to the CASWE Annual General Meeting. The Chair may stand for reelection for one consecutive term in the event that they maintain returning student status within a member school of CASWE. Duties of the Student Delegate to the Board of Directors shall be to: Represent the interests, needs and concerns of the students enrolled in Schools of Social Work to the CASWE Board of Directors; as well as participate in ad hoc committees as needed.Act and advocate on behalf of the students in all matters of concern regarding the Board.Disseminate information from Board meetings to the Chair prior to the Student Standing Committee meeting and to Student Delegates on an as needed basis. Reporting to Student Delegates is to occur a minimum of once per year at the annual meeting. The Delegate to the Board shall not hold voting powers within the Student Standing Committee annual meeting, but shall participate in order to gather and disseminate information. In order to hold voting power in the CASWE AGM, the Delegate to the Board must be an individual member of CASWE within the fiscal year the AGM is held.Remain accessible to students for discussion on matters of interest and actively seek to engage student perspectives on issues being raised at a Board level in order to maximize representation of various student positions.To mentor the incoming delegate to the Board of Directors for a period of six months at the time of new elections.To monitor and support the Chair of the Student Standing Committee in order to ensure functions are effectively carried out. In the event of gaps in the fulfillment of duties it will be the duty of the Student Delegate to the Board of Directors to raise concerns at the Board level and fulfill any necessary functions until the election of a new Chair. Elections for the position of the Student Delegate who sits on the CASWE Board of Directors shall occur at the end of the individual’s term. The position shall be a two-year term, with the possibility of being reelected for one additional year. Elections for this position shall be accomplished in the Student Standing Committee meeting prior to the Annual General Meeting in the year that applies. This term is subject to satisfactory performance and may be shortened in the event of documented and substantial concern. Duties of the Student Delegate shall be to:
Be elected by their peers within their respective CASWE accredited institution and subsequently represent the students of a particular School of Social Work. These members represent their peers at the CASWE Annual General Meeting. Delegate members hold the power to vote on matters of student interest both within the Student Standing Committee meeting and within CASWE’s AGM. Actively disperse information in regard to CASWE to the student population of their respective institution in the academic year following the AGM, up until the date that a new delegate is elected. At the time of the new delegates election it is the duty of the previous delegate to ensure all relevant information and functions are clearly communicated to the new representative. Duties of the General Student Member shall be to:
This category shall include any and all students attending an accredited Canadian school of social work on a full- or part-time basis. All students are considered valued members of the Student Standing Committee of CASWE and as such may dialogue with the Chair or Delegate to the Board on matters of student interest throughout the year as well as attending the annual meeting. General student members will not hold voting power within the Student Standing Committee meeting as Delegates hold the responsibility to vote on behalf of all students within their institution.
