Conference :: Conference 2010
CANADIAN FEDERATION FOR THE HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES

The Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences will take place Friday, May 28th to Friday, June 4th, 2010 at Concordia University, Montréal, Québec.

Congress 2010 Theme
Connected Understanding

Connected understanding speaks to scholarly activity from two perspectives.  First, it refers to the impact of the rise of digital technology on scholarly research and research-creation.  New technology has provided humanities and social science scholars with different research tools, access to new sources and new means of communicating results to colleagues and the wider public.  In many cases these new tools have transformed how scholars understand problems.  In addition, the idea of connected understanding speaks to the links that scholars make with their colleagues in other fields and with larger audiences beyond the academic world.  Here, too, technology has enhanced the ability of individuals outside the academy to respond to, and challenge the authority of scholars.  These connections have added new voices to the discussion of many issues and complicated our understanding of them.  Finally both dimensions of this theme fit well with the institutional identity of Concordia, a university which prides itself on technological and communications innovation, and which is strongly connected to the larger urban community of which it is part.
