Together with 11 staff, the 19 faculty members offer programs, through a combination of on-campus and distance delivery, to approximately 200 undergraduate students, 65 MSW and 16 PhD students. Recent developments at the School include substantial additional provincial funding; revision of the BSW program; increased enrolment in the BSW and MSW programs; the introduction of a second-degree BSW program in fall 2010, and a new program delivered in Goose Bay, Labrador in co-operation with the Nunatsiavut Government; and significant hiring of new faculty. The School participates actively in Memorial’s Centre for Collaborative Health Professional Education. The School of Social Work is one of fourteen Faculties and Schools at Memorial. ACT for Youth is a 5-year project (2009-2014) funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. The project brings together a multi-sectoral alliance of community stakeholders; an interdisciplinary network of scholars; and youth to undertake a programme of applied research, capacity building, knowledge transfer and evaluation that is focused on youth in ‘marginalized’ urban communities using as a case study the Jane-Finch community. ACT for Youth is exploring five research questions managed by five Research Theme Working Groups. Each Research Theme’s activities involve the collection of original data using mixed-methods such as survey, in-depth interviews, ethnographic focus groups and arts-based approaches as well as analysis of relevant secondary data sets. Each Research Theme is co-chaired by a university and community researcher and includes university and community researchers and youth working together in all aspects of the research process. The Post-Doctoral Fellow will primarily contribute to the Youth Survey Working Group that will develop and conduct a large scale survey of youth in Grades 6 – 12. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: A Ph.D. with specialization in social work, public policy, any of the social sciences or a closely related discipline is required by the time of appointment (or at most 6 months after appointment). The candidate should have the ability to work collaboratively on interdisciplinary research teams, support their research programs, produce high-quality scholarship and publications, deliver presentations, and advance the ACT for Youth research program. We are especially interested in candidates with expertise in quantitative approaches that can design and oversee data collection, conduct statistical analyses, and write / disseminate findings from the research.
