Two full time, tenure-track appointments, at the assistant or associate level, beginning July 1, 2012. Candidates are required to demonstrate a familiarity with teaching social work at the BSW level with a focus on structural, Indigenous, feminist, and Northern, rural/remote perspectives. The preferred areas of expertise candidates will possess include social welfare policy, health and mental health, sexual diversity, homelessness/housing, social justice, law, and/or direct practice with individuals and families. The successful candidates will be expected to maintain an active program of teaching, research, and service. Candidates must possess a PhD in either Social Work or a related discipline and at least one degree in social work.

Instructor 1 (tenure track) - Social Work Practice

The School of Social Work (UBC – Vancouver) invites applications for an Instructor 1 position in Social Work Practice. A PhD in social work or related discipline with an MSW or an MSW with an exceptional record of professional practice is required. Major criteria in selection will be demonstration of excellence in teaching of practice at the graduate and undergraduate levels, interest in developing innovative pedagogical approaches, and current and extensive practice experience. Area of practice is open but the School has interest in expanding its expertise in Child and Family, Health, Mental Health, Social Care (Aging, Disability) and Addictions.

The successful candidate will exhibit distinction in teaching and service and educational leadership. He or she will be expected to teach BSW and MSW practice courses (e.g., communication skills, practice with individuals and families, family counseling), and to contribute to ongoing curriculum and program development. The creation and maintenance of effective links with the professional social work practice community will be an important consideration.

The position is subject to final budgetary approval. Salary will be commensurate with experience. As this is a tenure-track position, an Instructor I who in later years is reviewed for tenure and promotion to Senior Instructor will be required to show evidence of excellence in teaching and service, demonstrated educational leadership, distinction in the field of teaching and learning, sustained and innovative contributions to curriculum development, course design and other initiatives that advance the University’s ability to excel in its teaching and learning mandate. It is expected that Senior Instructors will keep abreast of current developments in their respective disciplines and in the field of teaching and learning. A Senior Instructor in the fifth and subsequent years in that rank may be reviewed for promotion to the rank of Professor Teaching.

The School is a member of the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE). Both the BSW and MSW programs are fully accredited by the Board of Accreditation of CASWE.

Assistant Professor of Social Work
(First Nations/Aboriginal)

The School of Social Work invites applications for a full-time tenure track position, beginning July 1, 2012. This position will be at the rank of tenure-track Assistant Professor. The position is subject to final budgetary approval. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

We are seeking candidates with a demonstrated ability and interest in high quality teaching; excellence in scholarly activity; and knowledge of, and experience in First Nations/Aboriginal culture and issues. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active program of research, teaching, graduate supervision, and service, to advance First Nations/Aboriginal social work education, curriculum development and research, and to effectively coordinate and lead various initiatives in relation to First Nations issues. Evidence of an ability to liaise with First Nations/Aboriginal communities and organizations as well as knowledge of the languages, cultures and contemporary issues of First Nations peoples is an asset. A Master’s degree in Social Work and PhD in either Social Work or related disciplines are required.

The successful candidate will teach a wide spectrum of undergraduate (BSW) and graduate (MSW) level courses in social work practice and/or social policy, including First Nations issues, health, mental health and Aboriginal Child Welfare. Responsibilities of the position will include recruitment and support for First Nations/Aboriginal students; liaison with First Nations/Aboriginal communities; and participation in the development of an Aboriginal Strategic Plan for the School. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to Graduate supervision at the MSW and PhD levels.

This is an exciting time for the School with many changes taking place in program offerings and curriculum design. As a result, the successful candidate will be encouraged to propose courses that will enhance the students’ understanding of First Nations social work practice and policy at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The School is a member of the Canadian Association for Social Work Education (CASWE). Both the BSW and MSW programs are fully accredited by the Board of Accreditation of CASWE.   In 2005, the School initiated a PhD program in Social Work which has admitted top students from across the world.

From its Regional base in Edmonton, the Faculty of Social Work offers undergraduate and graduate education to students in central and northern Alberta. We are seeking two professorial stream faculty members with strong research potential and capacity to teach in our Clinical Practice specialization MSW, as well as in the generalist BSW in Edmonton and in rural sites in northern and First Nation and Métis communities. The Faculty is interested in supporting research programs and teaching excellence in the areas of social work in child welfare, health/mental health, immigrants and refugees, and First Nations and Métis communities. Applicants with experience and expertise from a critical perspective in any of these areas are encouraged to apply. Experience in curriculum development, alternative delivery models, academic administration and community-based research and practice are desired.

The Faculty of Social Work invites applications for two tenure-track positions in its Edmonton-based Central and Northern Alberta Region, one assistant professor and one associate professor. Candidates for a position at the Assistant Professor rank must hold a doctorate in social work (or related discipline), at least one degree in social work (or equivalent), refereed scholarly publications, practice experience, and university-level teaching experience. At the Associate Professor level, candidates are expected to have a strong scholarship record, an established program of research, extensive teaching experience, and interest in collaborative academic leadership. All candidates must have a demonstrated capacity to work effectively in a collaborative environment.

Candidates will preferably hold a Ph.D. in social work or a Ph.D. in a related field with previous training in social work. Those currently carrying out Ph.D. studies or having a Master of Social Work with extensive experience in the field may also be considered.

St. Thomas University

Tenure-Track Position in the School of Social Work

The School of Social Work, St. Thomas University, invites applications for an entrylevel, tenure-track appointment, at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin July 1, 2012, pending budgetary approval. 

St. Thomas University is an undergraduate, liberal arts institution whose roots are in the faith and tradition of the Roman Catholic Church. With a full-time enrolment of 2,500, its students graduate with Bachelor of Arts, Applied Arts, Education, and Social Work degrees. The faculty members are distinguished teachers, researchers and scholars, and the University holds four Canada Research Chairs.

The successful candidate will be able to teach in at least two subject areas. Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of social movements, experience and knowledge of social action, and expertise in applying structural social work theory to direct practice. Applicants with knowledge of and experience with issues of diversity are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will have knowledge of critical theories, such as structural, feminist, critical race, critical disability, postcolonial, or queer theory and their application to practice, as well as the ability to utilize a variety of teaching methods such as lectures, team teaching, and experiential learning. 

A PhD or imminent completion is required. Eligibility for membership in the New Brunswick Association of Social Workers is a requirement.
